What happens when you book

  1. Pick a trip and a date. The card opens our page for that trip, and its Check availability button takes you to Viator with the trip selected.
  2. Pay on Viator. Viator takes the payment and holds the booking. We never see your card details, and the price is the same as booking that trip on Viator directly.
  3. Get your confirmation. Viator emails it. It names the operator, the pickup point or the instruction to call for one, and what’s included. Cruise Milford and Pure Milford need you to contact them with your accommodation so they can set your pickup.
  4. Be at the pickup on time, 10 to 15 minutes early depending on the operator, with the confirmation on your phone.

Cancelling. Every trip on this page can be cancelled for a full refund up to 24 hours before it starts. Small group tours can also be cancelled by the operator if too few people book, so check your email the day before.

Weather. The road trips depend on the Milford Road, and the flights on the cloud. Operators make the call on the day. Glenorchy Air says a cancellation after check-in isn’t refunded, and Milford Sound Scenic Flights asks you to phone 90 minutes before for a weather check.

The booking help page covers changes, refunds and who to contact about what.

What’s included and what’s not

Included on every trip here

  • Return transport from Queenstown, by coach, van or plane
  • The Milford Sound cruise, 1 hr 45 min to 2 hr 10 min depending on the trip
  • Commentary from the driver, guide or pilot

Not included unless the listing says so

  • Lunch. Five of the twelve trips include it; the rest sell it on the boat or as an add-on
  • Breakfast and the Te Anau coffee stop, which you pay for yourself
  • Alcohol
  • Child car seats on several coaches

Where the listings differ, and why it matters

Lunch is the split that catches people out. Cheeky Kiwi, Altitude Tours, Pure Milford, awesomeNZ and Cruise Milford include a packed or picnic lunch. GreatSights sells a picnic or buffet as an upgrade. Southern Discoveries, Luxe Tours and Milford Sound Select leave it out, and you buy food on the boat. One Southern Discoveries listing title mentions a buffet lunch that its inclusions don’t list, so go by the inclusions.

Pickup is the other one. Cheeky Kiwi, awesomeNZ, Luxe Tours, Cruise Milford and Altitude Tours collect from accommodation, some only at selected addresses. Southern Discoveries, GreatSights and Milford Sound Select start from a set stop in town.

A few extras are worth knowing. GreatSights includes gratuities. Altitude Tours has WiFi on board, as do the glass roof coaches from GreatSights and awesomeNZ. Luxe Tours supplies chilled water and a morning snack. On the fly trips, True South includes free parking at its terminal and Milford Sound Scenic Flights free parking for self-drive guests, while Glenorchy Air’s nearest parking is charged.

The day, hour by hour

A coach or small group day trip from Queenstown is 12 to 13 hours, and about 10 of them are road and stops. The 2 hours on the water sit in the middle. This is how the day ran for the travellers we watched, on a 6:30am to 7:20am pickup.

6:00am to 7:20am. Pickup. The Beachpackers were collected at 6:30am in downtown Queenstown and recorded about 6°C. Dane and Stacey left at 6am. Bani NZ was picked up at 7:20am and got up at 5 to eat breakfast first.

7:00am to 9:30am. South along Lake Wakatipu and across Southland. The driver or guide talks most of the way. All three coach travellers praised the commentary, and Bani NZ’s driver covered Lord of the Rings locations, birds, avalanches and how the road was built.

About 9:30am. Te Anau, the only town on the route. Coaches stop for 15 to 30 minutes for coffee, food and toilets. Dane and Stacey reached it “just over two hours” in.

10:00am to 12:30pm. The Milford Road, with short photo stops. The usual ones are the Eglinton Valley, Mirror Lakes (a 10 minute boardwalk loop), a toilet stop at Knobs Flat, and Monkey Creek, where several travellers drank straight from the stream. The Beachpackers felt the coach left the Eglinton Valley too soon. Dane and Stacey found roughly one stop an hour kept the 5 hours from dragging.

Around 12:30pm. The Homer Tunnel, one lane under the Darran Mountains, then the switchbacks down the Cleddau Valley. Some coaches stop at The Chasm; its viewing bridge was closed the day The Beachpackers went.

1:00pm to 3:00pm. The cruise, out to the Tasman Sea and back, usually 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours. If lunch is included it’s often eaten on board, and Dane and Stacey said boarding and eating took about half an hour of their 2 hours.

About 3:00pm. Back on the coach. Bani NZ’s group left Milford at 2:30pm. The return is mostly driving, and Bani NZ’s coach broke it in Te Anau again.

6:30pm to 8:00pm. Back in Queenstown. The Beachpackers arrived at sunset after about 12 hours. Dane and Stacey, who added kayaking, weren’t back until about 9:30pm.

Flying instead

The fly, cruise and fly trips turn the same day into about 4 to 5 hours. Check-in is 30 minutes before take-off at Frankton or the airport, the flight is roughly 30 minutes each way, and the cruise is the same 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours. No traveller in the videos we used flew, so the timings here come from the operators’ listings.

When the cruise is cancelled

It happens, and the coach still goes. Bani NZ’s cruise was cancelled on arrival because of a tsunami warning after a large earthquake overseas. The group got about an hour at the terminal, was allowed on the boat for photos, and RealNZ refunded the full fare.

Pickup points and getting there

Most trips start from one of four places in Queenstown, and a few collect from hotels. Read your confirmation for the exact spot, because two of the operators below only give the pickup time once you call them.

OperatorWhere you’re picked upWhen

Cruise MilfordListed hotels or the Frankton bus shelterCall at least 24 hours before to confirm the place and time

There’s no all-day parking at the Athol Street stop, so walk or get dropped off.

Fly trips

The flights leave from Frankton, about 15 minutes from town. True South checks in at its office on Hawthorne Drive, Glenorchy Air at its desk inside the Queenstown Airport terminal, and Milford Sound Scenic Flights at Lucas Place. All three ask for check-in 30 minutes before departure. True South and Milford Sound Scenic Flights collect from selected central hotels. Glenorchy Air’s parking nearest check-in is a paid airport car park.

Driving yourself instead

Possible, but it’s the long version of the day. Luxe Tours, a small group operator, says to take Google’s 4 hours, add at least half again for stops, roadworks, fuel and food, and leave Queenstown by 7:30am for a 1pm cruise. It advises against doing the return in one day alone. Splitting the driving or sleeping in Te Anau is the usual answer. If you drive, the boat-only options are on our cruise page.

If you’re late for pickup

Call the operator straight away; their number is on your Viator confirmation. A coach leaving at 7am for a fixed cruise slot can’t wait long, and none of the listings promise a later seat.

What to bring

Queenstown can be dry while Milford pours, so pack for Milford. Luxe Tours says it plainly: always a warm top and a waterproof jacket.

  • A waterproof and a warm layer. The Beachpackers had 6°C at pickup, and the open deck is colder again.
  • Breakfast, or money for it. Pickups are early and the first food stop is Te Anau, 2 hours in. Bani NZ ate before a 7:20am pickup; The Beachpackers and Bani NZ both bought coffee and snacks in Te Anau.
  • Lunch, if yours isn’t included. Southern Discoveries, Milford Sound Select and Luxe Tours don’t include it; GreatSights sells it as an add-on. Lunch on the boat is paid for on board.
  • A refillable water bottle. Altitude Tours asks for one, and the creek stops are where travellers filled theirs.
  • Shoes that grip. Mirror Lakes and The Chasm are short walks on boardwalk and wet paths.
  • Insect repellent for the sandflies at Milford.
  • Child seats, if your operator asks. Southern Discoveries and Milford Sound Select say parents must bring their own. Pure Milford asks you to bring one, can’t fit it for you, and seats children 7 and under in the back half of the coach. Cheeky Kiwi provides booster seats for children 7 and under.
  • Something for the kids on a 13 hour day. Luxe Tours suggests extra snacks and screens and doesn’t recommend the trip for children under 5.

Don’t feed the kea. They turn up at the tunnel and the creek stops, and Bani NZ’s driver asked people not to.

How to choose

The real choice is how you want to spend 10 hours of road: in a group of 15 that stops when the guide wants, or in a 50 seat coach with a fixed timetable. Or you skip the road and fly.

What the dearer trips add

On the road, paying more mostly buys a smaller group. The small group tours run about the same 13 hours as the coaches, and their stops are listed at a similar 10 minutes each. The difference is 15 people getting off the van instead of 50, plus lunch and pickup from your accommodation on most. Luxe Tours, a small group operator, says the coaches reach the Eglinton Valley and Mirror Lakes from about 10:30am, so the timing of your stops matters as much as their length.

Flying buys back most of the day. It also changes what you see: the road’s valleys and creek stops for the view from above.

Pick this if

  • It’s your first time and you want the road as well as the fiord: a small group tour. All four travellers rated the drive as good as the destination.
  • You get carsick, have little time, or are travelling with children who won’t sit still for 13 hours: fly.
  • You like big windows and a set timetable: a glass roof coach. Dane and Stacey and Bani NZ both called out the skylight views.

Skip it if

  • You can stay a night in Te Anau. The drive to Milford drops to about 2 hours each way, and our Milford Sound cruises page lists the boat-only tickets for that, and the tours from Te Anau are on our Milford Sound tours page.
  • You only want to see the fiord, not the road, and the flights are outside your budget. The Milford Sound guide covers what you can do from the terminal on foot.

Our pick

If it’s your only shot at Milford: Cheeky Kiwi Travel’s small group tour. It carries 15 people at most, includes a picnic lunch and lists seven stops on the road, and its 3,806 reviews average close to 5. It’s the most reviewed day trip on the page.

If you’ve driven the Milford Road before: fly with True South. The same fiord in about 4 hours instead of 13, a guaranteed window seat, and 2,254 reviews averaging close to 5.

The one we’d skip: GreatSights’ glass roof coach. It’s the lowest rated road trip here at around 4.5, lunch and the Te Anau morning tea cost extra, and the listing warns the glass roof coach isn’t always the one that turns up.

Season and timing

The trips run all year, and the season changes the road more than the fiord.

SeasonMonthsOn a day trip from QueenstownWatch for
SummerDecember to FebruaryBack in Queenstown in daylight, and the busiest stops of the yearSmall groups have the fewest seats; book ahead
AutumnMarch to MayQuieter road, cold mornings by MayPickup in the dark late in the season
WinterJune to AugustSnow on the Darran Mountains, fewer peopleRoad closures and chains. Luxe Tours says a tour beats driving yourself in winter
SpringSeptember to NovemberSnowmelt on the falls, long days returningWeather that changes by the hour

Rain or sun

Two of the three coach travellers we watched had sunny days, and The Beachpackers said they’d “missed the dramatic beauty” of a wet Milford. The cruise travellers on our cruise page agree that rain brings out hundreds of temporary waterfalls. On a day trip you can’t pick your weather, so don’t try. Rain doesn’t cancel the coach.

Booking ahead

Bani NZ booked their RealNZ trip in advance because Milford is so popular. Every trip here can be cancelled free up to 24 hours before, so booking early and checking the forecast the day before costs nothing.

The best day of your trip to go

Pick a day with nothing early the next morning. A 13 hour day ending at 7 or 8pm is a lot, and Dane and Stacey, who added kayaking, called it “a huge day”. If you’re in Queenstown for three days or more, the middle one is the safest bet, leaving a spare day if the road closes.

FAQ

What's the best Milford Sound tour from Queenstown?

For most first timers, a small group tour. Cheeky Kiwi Travel and Altitude Tours both cap groups at 15, include lunch and have thousands of reviews averaging close to 5. If 13 hours on the road is the problem, a fly, cruise and fly trip covers the same fiord in about 4 hours. The comparison table above sets out the trade offs.

Can you do Milford Sound as a day trip from Queenstown?

Yes, and most visitors do. Coaches and small group vans leave between 6:30am and 7:20am and get back 12 to 13 hours later, with a 2 hour cruise in the middle. Driving it yourself in one day is possible but long. Luxe Tours, an operator, advises against doing the return alone.

How long is a Milford Sound day tour from Queenstown?

12 to 13 hours by road, door to door. About 5 hours of that is each way on the road with stops, and roughly 2 hours is the cruise. Add kayaking and it stretches further: Dane and Stacey left at 6am and were back about 9:30pm. Flying cuts the day to 4 or 5 hours.

Coach or small group: which is better?

Small groups carry 13 to 16 people, usually include lunch and pick up near where you're staying. Coaches take up to about 50, start from a set stop in town and are cheaper. All three coach travellers we watched were happy with the day; the one complaint was too little time at the Eglinton Valley.

Is flying to Milford Sound from Queenstown worth it?

It is if your time is short or the road doesn't appeal. The flight is about 30 minutes each way, every seat is a window seat on the three trips here, and the day takes 4 to 5 hours. It's the most expensive way in, and cloud can cancel or reroute a flight. Book a fly trip early in your stay, so there's room to rebook. Flights without the cruise are compared on our Milford Sound scenic flights page.

Are there private Milford Sound tours from Queenstown?

There are, but none made this page's list, because the private options on Viator have very few reviews so far. The smallest group here is Luxe Tours at 13. If a private day matters, ask a small group operator whether they'll take a private booking.

How much is a Milford Sound day tour from Queenstown?

Current prices are on each card above and update live. Coaches are the cheapest, small group tours cost a bit more, and the fly trips cost a little over twice as much. Check whether lunch is included before comparing, because it's extra on about half the road trips. Children's rates are discounted on most.

What happens if the cruise is cancelled?

The operator makes the call on the day, and what you get back depends on its terms. Bani NZ's cruise was called off on arrival because of a tsunami warning. The group had an hour at the terminal, was let onto the boat for photos and got a full refund from RealNZ. Ask before you leave Milford what your refund covers.

Is a day trip to Milford Sound OK with young children?

It can be, but it's a long day. Luxe Tours doesn't recommend it for children under 5. Several coaches need you to bring your own car seats, while Cheeky Kiwi supplies boosters for under 8s. Ben Devery, travelling with a family, suggests the sheltered front window seats on the boat, with cards for the kids.
