Our take
Southern Discoveries runs a 12.5 hour coach day from its visitor centre at 110 Beach Street, leaving at 7am, with up to 49 passengers and the longest stay at Milford on our list, about 2 hours 10 minutes. The nature cruise lasts up to 2 hours, with free tea and coffee and a commentary app in several languages. Lunch isn't included by default; you can add it or buy it. It has about 460 reviews averaging around 4.7.
Dane and Stacey took a Southern Discoveries coach, liked its glass skylight, and noted that boarding and lunch took about half an hour of their time on the boat. On our Milford Sound day trip comparison it's the coach that gives you the most time at the fiord. The listing's web address mentions a buffet lunch that its inclusions don't, so go by the inclusions. Parents must bring child restraints, or may be turned away.
Good for
- Travellers who want the most time at Milford on a coach day
- Anyone happy to buy lunch on board
Think twice if
- You're travelling with young children and no car seat
- You want hotel pickup

About 30 min.
- Te Anau is a beautiful town on the South Island of New Zealand. It’s known as a gateway to Fiordland National Park and Milford Sound. The region is home to endangered, flightless takahē birds and abundant trout in Lake Te Anau. Enjoy a short break here on your way to Milford Sound, in order to break up the journey, grab a coffee, and stretch your legs. About 30 min.
- This beautiful valley is glaciated with steep sides and a flat floor. This is an incredible stop you will make as apart of your journey to Milford Sound with Southern Discoveries. About 10 min.
- Enjoy a stroll among small lakes with stunning reflections of the Earl Mountains, should weather be permissive on the day. This is an easy, short walk off the Milford Road. About 15 min.
