Our take
This is the trip that gets you onto Lake Wanaka. The listing gives two sailings a day from the newer jetty at Wanaka Marina, live commentary on the crossing, landing fees and about 2 hours on Mou Waho Island, with a 20 to 30 minute uphill walk. Boats take 16, and minimum numbers apply. Anyone who doesn't want the climb can stay near the landing. There's no food included.
It's Our pick for people staying in Wanaka on our Wanaka tours comparison, with about 280 reviews around 4.9. Joy Through The Globe spent about 40 minutes each way on the boat, with the skipper talking about birds and the island's history; signs put Arethusa Pool 30 minutes up and the lookout 40, and the last stretch was rocky. The listing says a guide comes on the island, but the operator has said in a review reply that it isn't guided, and it lists a hotel pickup it doesn't explain. Confirm both when you book.
Good for
- People staying in Wanaka who want time on the lake
- Families, with children's fares and no minimum age
Think twice if
- You can't manage a steep, rocky walk
- You expect lunch provided; pack your own

From the operator
Come and join us on a trip to our favourite place on Lake Wanaka, Mou Waho Island.Where you can find an island, on a lake, on an island, on a lake, on an island on the sea! Mou Waho Island is a protected nature reserve and is home to many native New Zealand birds including the curious and flightless Weka. A short walk takes you to the top of the island where you will be exposed to breathtaking panoramic views of the Arethusa pool, Lake Wanaka and its surrounding peaks.
Our water taxi leaves Wanaka Marina twice-daily travelling 15km up Lake Wanaka, passing Mou Tapu Island and the steep cliff of fisherman's cove to Mou Waho Island. Your friendly and knowledgeable skipper will inform you of the fascinating geology of the alps and the glaciers that created the lake as you travel along its sparkling waters.
Trip includes a 1.5+ hour freedom walk on the island. This part of the tour is non guided so that you can explore the island at your own pace.
