Our take

RealNZ's Milford Mariner overnight cruise starts at 4pm, with check-in 30 minutes before, and returns to the wharf the next morning. Dinner, breakfast, an en suite cabin in single or twin share and use of the kayaks or tender boat are included. Drinks from the bar are extra, and overnight parking is charged. Up to 64 guests sail. It has about 170 reviews averaging around 4.7.

Chloé and sometimes Ludvig, on what was most likely the Mariner, boarded at 3:45pm and were off at 9:15am. They rated the buffet and the crew's nature talk highly, found the cabin amenities patchy and had a rough run out to the sea. On our Milford Sound cruise comparison it's the bigger of the two overnight boats. Two catches: it's non-refundable and can't be changed, and Viator prices it per group of up to 2, not per person.

Good for

  • Couples who want the fiord after the day boats leave
  • Travellers who want kayaking included

Think twice if

  • Your dates might change
  • You get seasick, since the morning leg goes out to the open sea

Piopiotahi Milford Sound is one of the world's most spectacular environments, and it comes with natural hazard risk. A large earthquake or tsunami is extremely unlikely during your visit, especially a short one. Even so, these hazards do pose a risk to life, and once you are there, your options to stay safe are limited.

What to do: If an earthquake feels LONG or STRONG, Get GONE. Move up and away from waterways (the fiord and rivers) as quickly as possible. If you see or hear a landslide, do the same.
